Custom Data Request ID/Name: ENBRIDGE_ENB0D002_01_2025
Requestor Background:
Marc Orchard, Sr. Advisor, with Enbridge is requesting precise species and community element occurrence records for at-risk species where EOs intersect with their pipelines. Enbridge provides liquids pipelines, natural gas pipelines, gas utilities and storage, and renewable energy across North America. They are headquartered in Calgary, Canada.
Scope of Request:
Enbridge is requesting precise data for at-risk plants and animals including taxa with status under the U.S. Endangered Species Act; taxa ranked by NatureServe as being critically imperiled or imperiled on a range-wide basis (G1/G2, T1/T2); and community EOs.
Geographic Scope:
***Requestor only needs EOs that intersect with their pipelines, not for the entire subnation.
CA-AB, CA-BC, CA-MB, CA-NT, CA-ON, CA-QC, CA-SK, US-CO, US-IL, US-IN, US-KS, US-MI, US-MN, US-MO, US-MT, US-ND, US-NE, US-NY, US-OH, US-OK, US-TX, US-WI, US-WY
Mode and Date of Delivery:
The Licensed Data was provided to Enbridge in a password protected file geodatabase on September 29, 2023.
NatureServe will provide Enbridge a Licensed Dataset that includes two layers: (1) precise species and community Element Occurrence (EO) data layer for at-risk species that intersect with Licensee provided area around pipelines in subnations of operation (“Precise Licensed Dataset”), and (2) species and community Element Occurrence (EO) data layer for at-risk species that intersect with Licensee provided area around pipelines in subnations of operation with species names removed for data security purposes (“Species-blind Licensed Dataset”).
The ’Precise Licensed Dataset’ will be accessible only by users directly involved in the HCA Analysis, and IT/GIS staff involved in the maintenance of the geodatabase (no more than 10 staff). Access to ‘Species-blind Licensed Dataset’ will be granted on an ad-hoc basis to a limited set of internal staff, upon completion of necessary training and registration as a data user.
Purpose of Request:
Under the License Agreement with NatureServe, Enbridge Inc. will be permitted to use the data (internally only) for the purpose of High Consequence and Unusually Sensitive Area Modeling as directed by the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR and §195.6 Unusually Sensitive Areas). They will use the data to assess the presence of species and communities that meet the regulatory criteria around their pipeline operations. The Licensed Dataset will allow Enbridge to quickly determine where at-risk plants and animals occur within their area of operation and add infrastructure to pipeline segments located near at-risk species in order to mitigate the impacts to these species in the case of an accidental hazardous liquid release.
